South side development

Regenerating your city

The redevelopment of New Street station will transform the centre of Birmingham and create the conditions for further investment in the surrounding area including the south side. The project will not only create a world class station, it will open up the city, stimulate regeneration and create new jobs. Network Rail is working with Birmingham City Council to develop plans to upgrade the Pallasades and redevelop the south side. This would enable John Lewis to open a new full-line department store which will be one of the largest outside London.

Economic benefits

£100m of investment into regenerating your city

Up to 1000 new jobs created for the people of Birmingham

Maximising benefits for local people

Birmingham City Council will work with Network Rail and John Lewis to allow local people to benefit from the job opportunities created by the redevelopment.

Working considerately

We know how important it is to reduce the impact of our work during construction. We will keep train services running throughout the work and disruption to a minimum.

What can I expect?

The 250,000 sq ft, four storey John Lewis department store will be a spectacular addition to a redeveloped New Street station. The glass fronted department store will be designed to complement the stunning stainless steel façade of the redeveloped New Street station. The new department store, alongside an upgraded Pallasades will create an exciting new retail offering in the heart of the city, adding to the increasing benefits of Birmingham City Council's Big City Plan and the redevelopment of New Street station which is used by 140,000 passengers every day.
