The project team successfully completed several major projects over Christmas 2011 including:

  • Lifting in new sections to extend Navigation St footbridge, the extended bridge will open at the end of 2012.  Click here to see a timelapse video of the lift.
  • The construction of a tower crane outside the front of the station.  The crane will be used through 2012 to construct the new public square opposite the Bullring
  • The removal of the old Pallasades link bridge and escalator above Station Street.  The removal of the redundant structures is another step towards the construction of the new John Lewis department store which will get underway in 2012.
  • Preparatory work on platforms 1-7 to construct the foundations for new public space at the front of the station.
  • Construction of new train crew accommodation above Platform 1

Elswhere, demolition of Stephenson Tower will complete early in 2012 and work is well underway inside the old Pallasades central retail units to construct the new atrium which form the centrepiece of the redeveloped station, flooding the concourse with natural light.

Work continues to refurbish one platform at a time to allow a full train service to run.  Platform 12 reopened in December 2011 and Platform 10 is currently closed.
